Get A Handle on Kitchen Cabinet Hardware

Ready to put the finishing touches on your kitchen remodel? To help you get a grip on what will make your kitchen remodel shine, Central Construction Group, Inc. in Indianapolis shares the different kinds of cabinet hardware and finishes available.

Finishing options

To ensure your kitchen feels cohesive and uncluttered, try to match your kitchen faucet finish and style with your cabinet hardware. Too many materials in one space will make your kitchen feel chaotic and confused. Also, consider the maintenance required to keep your kitchen hardware gleaming. Some finishes require far more cleaning and polishing than others, so make sure you choose something you can live with.

  • Brushed nickel – This cabinet hardware option has a matte surface that resists water stains and fingerprints. It works well with both traditional and modern cabinetry.
  • Polished chrome – Cabinet hardware in polished chrome requires frequent cleaning to keep it shining and free from smudges and fingerprints. It looks great with more modern styles of cabinetry.
  • Polished brass – Like chrome, polished brass needs to be kept clean to gleam. This finish option works best in traditional kitchen spaces and adds warmth when coupled with wood finish cabinetry.
  • Satin or antiqued brass – Like brushed nickel, satin or antiqued brass are low maintenance finishes, but they still offer the sophisticated warmth you expected from brass.
  • Oil-rubbed bronze – The rich, aged patina that oil-rubbed bronze offers resists fingerprints and water stains, so requires very little maintenance. This finish is ideal for kitchens with a rustic, Tuscan or old-world style cabinetry.
  • Glass – To keep your glass hardware shining, it needs regular cleaning – just like windows. Glass cabinet hardware catches and reflects light, so adds sparkle to any kitchen.
  • Ceramic – This cabinet hardware option is easy to maintain and durable. Ceramic hardware is a good fit for cottage, country and retro style cabinetry.

Different kinds of hardware

Kitchen cabinet hardware is a small design element that has a big impact on the overall look of your kitchen. In addition to the effect kitchen cabinet hardware has on style, the various types of hardware must be considered for functionality. Remember, you’ll not only be looking at the hardware every day – but using it to open your doors and drawers.

  • Bar pulls – These linear, flat bar pulls come in many finishes and lengths. They offer a streamlined appearance and a secure grip, and work well with modern, minimalist, contemporary, Shaker, traditional and transitional cabinetry styles.
  • Bin pulls (also known as cup pulls) – These upside-down cup-shaped pulls come in virtually every finish and various sizes. They’re strong, easy to use, clean, and work great with heavy drawers. They work best with more traditional cabinetry.
  • Window sash pulls – This industrial-inspired hardware is easy to grip, so works great on drawers or cabinets that require a firm grip to open. This type of cabinet hardware works best with more traditional, country or vintage cabinetry.
  • Back plates – This kitchen hardware consists of a knob with a back piece that lies flush against the cabinet door or drawer face. There are countless styles and finishes available to complement many cabinetry styles. The back plate protects your cabinet finish from scratches, and gives the knob a more substantial and grounded feel.
  • Drop handles – This type of hardware consists of two pieces – one portion mounted onto the cabinet door, and another portion that dangles down. Drop handles aren’t as easy to open as other types of hardware. But they come in many finishes and styles, and give the cabinetry a furniture-like feel.
  • Recessed pulls – This streamlined kitchen hardware is actually built into the cabinet door and drawer facing. They are a great option for smaller galley kitchens with a modern, minimalist or contemporary cabinetry. But they are a commitment – as they can’t be switched out for other hardware.
