5 Top Bathroom Design Trends for 2018

Most people use their bathrooms for very personal business, whether it’s washing off the day’s grit, prepping for the daily grind or making pitstops throughout the day. As one of the most high-traffic rooms in your home, you want your bathroom design to be functional but also provide a little personal sanctuary where you can relax and relieve the day’s stress.

With current bathroom remodeling trends leaning toward a more luxurious look and personal spa feel, we pulled together the top 5 bathroom design trends to consider before updating your personal space.

1. Bathroom Tile for Flooring, Showers

Luxury Vinyl Tile, or LVT, on bathroom floors is a huge trend for 2018, with more homeowners choosing the wood-like flooring look without the worry of the floor warping once it gets wet. LVT, which also comes in luxury vinyl planks, is extremely durable, very thin and virtually indestructible. It’s a little more expensive than other materials, but installation typically costs less.

In addition to floor tile, homeowners also like the look of large tiles on their shower walls to replace old, cheap-looking fiberglass shower enclosures. While white subway tiles remain popular, a variety of tile colors, designs and sizes are available to create a customized look for any size of bathroom. Keep in mind that larger tiles also require less grout (and easier cleaning!). For the shower floor, we love the smaller mosaic tile that creates a pebble look.

2. Showers and Bathtubs

The popularity of the soaking tub or garden tub seems to be fizzling out, with homeowners choosing to remove the bathtub entirely and install a large, walk-in shower instead. Curbless showers, in particular, seem to be gaining traction among older homeowners who choose to remodel their bathrooms for easy access and with a goal toward staying in their homes as long as possible.

If your goal is to update the bathroom before selling your home, keep in mind that in real estate terms removing the bathtub means it will be listed as a three-quarter bathroom and not a full bath with tub, shower and toilet. This might be a big deal for homebuyers with small children, but today’s bathing trends are geared more toward shower lovers.

Nice finishing touches for a new shower include installing a built-in shower bench, built-in shower caddies and the perfect showerhead. Choose from dual showerheads, ceiling-mounted showerheads, wall-mounted showerheads or a multifunctional, hand-held showerhead for easier cleaning.

3. Bathroom Countertops and Vanities

For master bath remodels, a built-in custom double vanity with a quartz countertop really makes a luxurious statement. A durable material that requires little maintenance, quartz doesn’t need to be sealed like natural granite or marble. Providing an elegant and clean look, quartz falls somewhere in the middle on price.

Floating vanities with undermount sinks not only help to create an illusion of more space in the bathroom, but also provide more counterspace. White-painted bathroom cabinets are a popular trend, especially those with customized storage solutions to clean up that daily mess from hair dryers, straighteners, curling irons and other toiletries.

4. Heated Floors in the Bathroom

How many times have you walked into your bathroom on a cold, winter morning in Indiana and wished for the comfort of a heated floor? A little warmth goes a long way first thing in the morning.

If your bathroom remodel includes redoing the floors, consider adding radiant floor heating to the plan. Heated floors keep your porcelain tile, natural stone or LVT at the perfect temperature all day, and can even be applied to your shower floor. Add a little more sophistication with a heated towel rack to keep your bathroom towels nice and toasty.

5. Latest Trends in Toilets

Comfort-height toilets with elongated bowls and slow-close lids are the latest trends for the most-used seat in the home.

For true luxury, high-tech toilets can come with seat warmers, automatic lid openers, adjustable air dryers, built-in deodorizers and even wireless music players. Who needs a book, newspaper or phone for distraction anymore?
