Custom Cabinets: The Right Fit For You

When it comes to custom cabinetry, function is just as important as form. Rather than adjusting your lifestyle and use to fit prefabricated designs, custom cabinetry allows you to create with your needs in mind.

Here, we’ll go over some of the aspects of custom kitchen cabinetry and maybe offer some inspiration for your next kitchen project.

Why go custom?

Many homeowners have a kitchen vision so specific that stock kitchen cabinets just don’t cut it. Not only do custom cabinets provide the most design options, they also offer the highest quality of construction and often last the lifetime of the house.

Stock cabinets are often created to be screwed or glued together while custom cabinets offer the sturdiness and durability of dovetail or dowel joints. The higher price tag reflects the reliability and uniqueness of the product.

Woods & Finishes

You’ve seen the stock, white cabinets with silver hardware before. While they may provide the space you need, they lack personality. They’re the safe option. Some homeowners love or adore a particular species of wood that isn’t available in stock or semi-custom constructions. Yet another reason to go custom.

Before

Before our remodel, this Lake Kesslerwood home in Indianapolis had the lackluster white cabinets that added little life or personality to the space.

After

After CCG Indy worked their magic, custom walnut cabinets breathed new life into the space. The natural grain of the wood was highlighted by a rich, deep stain providing warmth in contrast to the light, stark stone used for the countertops and island.

Built-Ins & Extras

A homeowner’s vision for their space can be tied to a specific place or era that is no longer reflected in modern stock cabinets. Choosing to use custom cabinets is often the only choice for those who want to harness the beauty of yesteryear.

Designer Matt Clawson heard his client’s cries for the old English pub style built-ins. He designed these bonus room cabinets to satisfy their distinctive, vintage dreams and display their liquor with reverence to an older time.

While the finish and hardware on these semi-custom cabinets are pretty standard, customization in this Meridian Kessler kitchen came down to function. The custom spice rack cabinets flanking the island completed the client’s vision of functionality as they prepare food on their island.

The Bottom Line

A homeowner’s taste may be easily satisfied with stock, white cabinets with silver pulls. Custom cabinets are best for those whose dream kitchen isn’t found on the pages of a catalog, only in their head.

If function is your main concern, semi-custom cabinets may be the best route to take, adding extra wine storage, glass panes, or an incognito trash compactor. Begin with a list of your must-haves in terms of woods, finishes, and built-ins to help determine whether custom cabinetry will complete your dream kitchen.
