Timeless Kitchen Design Trends

Start a new decade in a style that never goes out of style.

Most homeowners embark on a kitchen remodeling project at least once in their lifetime, either when they buy their first home, when their family outgrows the space, or as they age and need to upgrade their empty nest for better accessibility.

Is 2020 your target year for kitchen remodeling? Chances are likely, since the oldest millennials enter their mid-30s this year (key age for first-time homebuyers) and an estimated 10,000 baby boomers per day reach retirement age (key age for downsizing or upgrading to age in place).

Avoid the temptation to follow so-called popular trends that may go out of style in a few years, and stick to timeless and elegant kitchen design trends that never look outdated.

Here are a few of our favorite kitchen design ideas from Central Construction Group to get you started:

Farmhouse Kitchen with Modern Touch

Signature to the farmhouse kitchen style, an apron-front sink combined with wood floors and rugged ceiling beams create a nostalgic feel that harkens back to simpler times. According to a recent Meyers Research survey of 25,000 homebuyers, 30% want a farmhouse sink and 61% want to install a super pantry or larder to store food and other items in a combination of drawers, pull-out baskets, shelves and racks.

Minimalism in Vogue for Contemporary Kitchen Look

Whites and grays, the hottest kitchen colors for 2020, lean toward a more contemporary, minimalist look featuring frameless cabinetry, slab-front faces and contrasting colors. Here, we paired a two-tone backsplash with gray countertops and natural maple wood cabinetry to create a clean, sleek look. Simplifying the kitchen with everything easily accessible creates such a nice workflow!

Baby Boomers Prefer Larger, Open Kitchens

Over a third of baby boomers renovate their kitchens for better age accessibility, according to a recent Houzz study on kitchen trends. Instead of downsizing to a smaller home, more older homeowners are choosing to age in place by remodeling their kitchens in a larger, more open-concept design. Updates often include adding a large island for family gatherings, installing more elaborate lighting or utilizing modern technology for touch-free access.

Natural Elements Accented with Pops of Color

While white and gray remain the most popular kitchen colors, adding pops of color combined with natural elements lends sweet charm to the space and a bit of edginess to a transitional-style kitchen. In the kitchen pictured above, we combined a custom wood barn door with painted cabinetry and several modern features to create a look that’s both contemporary and traditional.

Utilizing Extra Kitchen Space Gains Popularity

Another popular choice for kitchen remodeling involves adding a separate bar or buffet area, like the one shown above. Some homeowners also choose to add a homework station or small desk area near the kitchen.
