Clever Design Solutions for a Cramped Closet

With an ever-growing and ever-changing wardrobe, it can feel like you’re constantly trying to make more space for your clothes and an endless array of accessories where there just isn’t any. If you’ve already Marie Kondo-ed your bedroom and are still struggling to find a home for all of your belongings, check out some of our favorite design solutions to give your cramped closet the makeover it deserves.

Baskets, Bins, Battlestar Galactica

When dealing with a cramped closet, it’s important to incorporate accessible storage solutions that will make your life easier instead of merely adding to the clutter. This may be the simplest and most versatile hack considering the endless style and size options available when choosing your baskets. Remember to take measurements of your closet, take notice of the size of your chosen baskets, and have a plan for each basket before bringing it into your closet.

Modular Shelving

Modular shelving is trending right now and it’s easy to understand why. They’re highly flexible and can be configured in nearly limitless ways to create personalized storage for even the smallest spaces. Modular shelving units consist of separate modules that can be stacked on, against, or alongside each other to function as bookshelves, room dividers, or side tables. These shelves would make a great statement piece in a bedroom, or minimalistic and easily blended into the rest of your room. Use these shelves to display your most prized possessions and statement wardrobe pieces.

Elevate Your Space

The purpose of this hack is to create a function out of once wasted space. By elevating your bed using inexpensive risers, you’re able to use an array of additional storage options from shoe organizers to baskets for accessories or even additional drawers to catch the miscellaneous things that may have been hiding in the farthest corners of your closet.

Out of Season Storage

One of the most overlooked hacks is to relocate your out of season items (especially those bulky fall and winter clothes) to an alternative location since you probably won’t be reaching for them in the coming months. If you’re worried about fluctuating weather, choose a handful of your favorite out-of-season pieces and tuck those away in the back of your closet. By storing your clothes that aren’t season-appropriate, you’re left with less to organize and more room to work with.

Custom Closet Design

Sometimes the problem isn’t just a cramped closet, but the master bedroom needs a redesign. We work with clients on a master bedroom suite project frequently. This gives you a chance to redesign your master bedroom, bathroom, and closet with the way you want to use them in mind. This can look different for every situation but can include adding square feet, adding a walk-in closet, and creating a custom closet. This includes custom shelving, hanging rods, cubbies, benches—anything you could possibly need for storing your belongings.

Upgrade Your Laundry System

The most annoying thing about storing clothes may not actually be the storage of them all, but doing the laundry. Starting loads, transferring them, folding everything, and then putting it all away can be a hassle. CCG helps many of our clients integrate their laundry room into their master closet. By having your washer and dryer in the master suite, you eliminate the walks from the laundry room to all the spaces to put away clothes. If your laundry room is downstairs, but all of your bedrooms are upstairs, this may be a true game-changer for your laundry days. You will save time on putting away your laundry, and you will have the ease of throwing things in straight from your own closet. We have seen this become an increasingly popular option to transform closet and laundry spaces.

Hopefully, there are a few tips here to help you organize your closet in a way that works for you. If you’re looking to upgrade your closet space, add that laundry room into your master closet, or any other remodel, reach out. We’d love to hear from you.
