Best Interior Paint Colors Unveiled

Picking the perfect paint color can be a challenge. A critical part of any remodeling process, selecting a paint color helps set the tone for any room.

Not surprisingly, mortgage lenders say paint colors can even impact your home’s value. Whether you are remodeling a newly purchased home, freshening up your current home or remodeling to sell your home, the right paint color can make a world of difference.

Sherwin-Williams recently released its 2021 Colormix Forecast, making it easier than ever to find the most popular paint colors. The rhythm-inspired collection features 40 trendy colors in four distinct palettes: Sanctuary, Encounter, Continuum and Tapestry. Each palette showcases 10 of the most popular interior paint colors.

Predictions indicate neutrals (whites and grays) will remain on-trend, as well as Earth-inspired tones and the occasional pop of color.

Here are some paint-color highlights from Sherwin-Williams’ 2021 Colormix Forecast:

White Delight

Color experts estimate neutral shades make up 80 percent of the paint color market with white hues leading the way at an astounding 38 percent. Who knew there could be so many shades of white to choose from? In fact, white paint has many different undertones.

Warm white undertones (pink, orange, yellow or red) pair well with natural materials, like wood, and help create a nice, organic flow within an interior space. Cool white undertones (think blues and grays) work best in rooms with lots of natural sunlight and add instant contrast. Pure white, however, has the least amount of undertones and is ideal for rustic or eclectic spaces with deeply saturated color.

Some white-hot choices to consider from the 2021 Colormix Forecast include colors such as Pure White, Alabaster, High Reflective White and Greek Vanilla.

Shades of Gray

A recent paint color analysis suggests rooms painted gray can increase a home’s value as much as $5,000. Before falling into a pit of despair over the endless shades of gray available, take a deep breath and relax.

When contemplating gray paint choices, take into consideration a room’s lighting, as well as its functionality. Gray paint with a cool undertone tends to work well in bathrooms or kitchens, while gray paint with warm undertones works best in living rooms and bedrooms. For accent walls or rooms with heavy texture, like exposed brick, consider a dark gray.

Sherwin-Williams’ new Sanctuary palette offers several gray options including Pearl Gray, Morris Room Grey and Modern Gray.

Fade to Blue

A world-wide survey indicates blue is the most popular color in 10 countries and four continents. Not surprisingly, it’s also a go-to choice for interior paint.

Cleansing and tranquil, light blues are ideal for accents, or small areas like hallways. Dark blue shades, however, transform cabinets and trim.

Bold blues in the 2021 Colormix Forecast include Blustery Sky, Naval, Commodore and Perfect Periwinkle.
