Smart Design Solutions for Small Spaces

Living in a small space requires smart, space-saving solutions for maximum functionality and enjoyment. Both are important for loving where you live, so here are 6 solutions to help you make the most of your small space.

Open shelving

Empty wall space can be turned into an eye-catching open shelving unit. Utilizing open space gives you organized storage while also adding display items and decor. This also helps you stay on top of keeping your shelves organized and clean.

Lighten up

The simplest solution of them all—keep things light. Let all the natural light in the room you can get, and when that isn’t possible, keep the tones of the room within a lighter color palette. Brightening up a space gives the illusion that it is bigger than it actually is. Darker colors will do the opposite and shrink the room a bit. Keep things light and crisp for an easy way to help your small space look its best. Check out our showcase for some examples of designs with lighter and brighter colors.

Pocket doors

Opt for pocket doors where you can. This saves space in the sense there will be no open swinging doors blocking hallways or your view. You can even have pocket doors with glass panes. This lets light pass through (see lighting example above), but still creates a distinction between rooms.

Do some demo

Sometimes the answer to knock out some walls and make your own storage. This may not be your first idea, but this can come with the highest reward. This allows you to move around rooms and add extra storage space into existing rooms. Think storage closet under the stairs or laundry room upstairs where your laundry is actually dirtied and waiting to be washed. These things make your every day easier, and help you make the most of your small space. This type of work needs to be done by a professional, and we’d love to help you with your next project if this is something you’re looking for.

Move the laundry room

In that same vein, we see a lot of clients opt to move their laundry room into their master bedroom. This allows you to immediately put your laundry where it needs to be washed, and then also put them directly away when they are clean. Talk about efficiency! If you already have a laundry room somewhere else, this can easily be turned into a storage closet, pantry, or absorbed into the nearest room to enlarge it.

Multi-purpose space

Have a corner nook in your kitchen piling up random items? A home office that isn’t set up ideally for all the things you use it for? A guest bedroom that is rarely touched? Making these kinds of spaces into a multipurpose room can add the amount of functionality you need, and sometimes a multipurpose space is just unavoidable. To combine the purpose of all of the things mentioned, create a space with a desk, storage, and even a hideaway Murphy bed or a daybed. You still have a guest bedroom, but you also have room to work, do activities, your kids can craft and you can work on anything you need.
