As home remodeling demands trend upward, knowing which add-on projects provide the highest cost recovery ensures you get the most out of your investment.

While kitchen upgrades and bathroom renovations give homeowners the highest satisfaction, additional project items contribute to maximum cost recovery, according to the National Association of Realtors® and National Association of the Remodeling Industry’s 2025 Remodeling Impact Report.

Source: National Association of Realtors® and National Association of the Remodeling Industry

If you’re ready to remodel, consider these top cost recovery add-ons to your home remodeling project.

Entryway Door

A new steel front door tops the list, with cost recovery at 100%. Those who install a new fiberglass front door see a cost recovery of 80%. A front door swap is a quick add-on project that improves the overall look and security of your home.

Other benefits? Both steel and fiberglass exterior doors are low maintenance and improve a home’s energy efficiency with superior insulation and sealing. If you love the look of wood but want to upgrade, both steel and fiberglass doors come in a variety of styles and finishes.

Closet Renovation

A closet renovation is a great add-on to a larger remodeling project, and features an 83% cost recovery. Typically seen in a primary bedroom remodel, this renovation increases closet space and improves functionality.

Adding convenient racks, shelves, and drawers improves the look of your closet and increases storage. Your style dictates lighting choices, such as task lighting or chandeliers. Popular closet seating choices include chairs, benches, or ottomans.

New Windows

A kitchen or bath remodel is a great time to replace old windows. New vinyl windows have a 74% percent cost recovery, while new wood windows have a 71% cost recovery.

Not only does it improve the look of your home, but it also significantly improves your home’s energy costs and reduces traffic noise. Vinyl windows are durable and low maintenance. Those who opt for double-hung windows appreciate improved ventilation and easier access for window cleaning.

Basement or Attic Conversion

Converting a basement or attic to usable living space is a stand-alone remodeling project that increases the square footage and value of your home. A basement remodel has a 71% cost recovery, while the cost recovery for an attic conversion is 67%.

A basement or attic remodel helps you enjoy your home even more and provides more space for what you need. You can transform this area into a living space/kitchenette combo, entertainment area, or a place for your favorite hobby. Need more ideas? Check out our blog post on finished basement ideas.

Kitchen Renovation

A kitchen renovation ranks near the top of homeowner satisfaction and also features a 60% cost recovery. As one of the main spaces in your home, it’s not hard to see why so many homeowners opt for a kitchen upgrade.

Depending on what you need, this is the time to improve your kitchen layout, add seating, increase storage, update finishes, and install new appliances. Kitchen remodels transform dated or humdrum rooms into beautiful, functional spaces that become the focal point of your home.

A charming home in the historic Meridian-Kessler neighborhood recently underwent a comprehensive remodel, touching nearly every space. With Central Construction Group at the helm and Adam Gibson leading the design, the project balanced modern updates with respect for the home’s original character.

The project began with new electrical throughout, followed by refinishing the solid oak hardwood floors in the bathrooms, kitchen, and second floor. For the walls, the homeowners chose Sherwin-Williams 7011 Natural Choice, a soft, neutral shade described as “creamy yet cool,” to bring a cohesive feel to the interior.

A new space addition at the back of the home includes a dining room and extra bedroom, making the layout more flexible for everyday living. Outside, the exterior received a full makeover with new siding, doors, windows, and a deck designed for outdoor entertaining.

For the kitchen, the homeowners chose custom carpentry, honey bronze hardware, quartz countertops, and upgraded Miele appliances, blending function with elegance. They also added a pull-out drawer for their pet bowls.

In the primary bath, classic white subway tile sets the backdrop for a high-end Kohler Veil wall-mounted toilet, complete with integrated bidet and night light, sourced with help from the local Kohler Signature Store.

On the second floor, the homeowners created a serene experience with the addition of a soaking tub, marble tile, a heated towel rack, and refreshed cabinetry and finishes.

The result is a home that feels updated, welcoming, and more functional, adding an elevated take on a Meridian-Kessler classic. Take a look at the home prior to the remodel by Central Construction Group in the three “before” photos below.

A kitchen renovation not only adds beauty and value to your home, it transforms how you use the space.

Altering a kitchen’s layout, adding more countertops, and replacing storage with extra-wide cabinets are just a few ways to improve the efficiency of this hardworking room.

That’s the case with CCG’s full kitchen renovation in the historic Forest Hills area on the northside of Indianapolis, which now radiates light and warmth in a modern style.

Project Details

Designer and photographer Adam Gibson balanced the light color of the upper cabinets and walls with the warm wood tones of the lower cabinets. This complements the solid oak wood flooring, stained on site.

The kitchen’s striking, sleek countertops are made of honed marble, with the oversized island featuring a three-inch mitered edge. The marble backsplash ties it together for a modern, cohesive look. We added HydroShield to the countertops to maintain a clean, stain-resistant surface.

The countertop island was custom cut by the sink to fit recessed pop-up USB countertop outlets.

The kitchen also features a Sub-Zero refrigerator, a Wolf Speed Oven, and Fisher and Paykel drawer dishwashers.

If you’re looking for ways to create an entertaining-friendly space, look no further than your kitchen. With just a few changes, you can transform this practical area into the perfect spot for food, friends, and fun.

The good news is you can do this whether you’re planning a full kitchen remodel or simply want to improve your space with functional and stylish additions. A well designed plan includes creating the right atmosphere so guests feel at ease, as well as practical matters like where to store food and clean dishware.

Consider these top ideas to revamp your kitchen into the ideal entertaining space.

Custom Island and Countertops

kitchen with large custom island and pendant lighting

A one-of-a-kind island and countertops dials up the “wow” factor and anchors your kitchen’s entertaining space. Guests gravitate to comfortable chairs and barstools where they can enjoy drinks and good conversation.

When it comes to island placement, it’s important to consider kitchen floorplan and layout, so your guests can easily navigate through rooms and carry on conversations with ease.

Seating Areas

Look beyond the kitchen with connected seating areas. Smaller seating areas with a comfortable couch or chairs provide ambience and allow guests to enjoy quieter conversations away from the crowd. It’s also a good place for guests to appreciate an outdoor view, warmth from a fireplace, or a game on TV. Or, add built-in benches and a table to turn an underused corner into a convenient seating area.

Beverage and Wine Coolers

Optimize your undercounter space with a beverage and wine cooler to keep drinks ready for your next gathering. A beverage cooler with matching cabinetry keeps craft beer or cocktail ingredients ready and at the right temperature.

A wine cooler maximizes wine storage and provides humidity control, stylishly preserving your bottles of vino. Choose customized bottle or can configurations, LED lighting, and a range of temperature controls to meet your specific entertaining needs.

Walk-in Pantry

A walk-in pantry allows you to easily organize food and spices or store entertaining supplies and bulky appliances out of sight. This useful space is fully customizable, so you decide the placement of shelves, drawers, or pull-out racks.

You may choose to dedicate shelves for go-to ingredients or hard-to-store platters and bowls you reach for when you serve a crowd.

Convenient Storage

Create personalized kitchen storage solutions to streamline your entertaining. This could include adding open shelving to store copper barware or modern glassware that’s too pretty to hide behind cabinet doors.

Maybe you need a designated spot to store cocktail accessories or additional shelving to store plates, bowls, and snack trays. The right storage solutions help you stay organized and ensure you can quickly assist your guests.

Luxury Appliances

Preparing food and drinks is messy business, no matter how many people you host. Ease your workload with luxury appliances that work efficiently and are built to last. High-end stovetops, ovens, and refrigerators provide superior performance and look impressive. Consider doubling up on ovens or dishwashers to speed up the cooking and cleaning process, keeping your kitchen in tip-top entertaining shape.

You see it all the time on TV shows like “Love It or List It” — a family outgrowing their cherished home. But as host Hilary Farr shows time and time again, thoughtful updates can add space and function.

This was the case in a recent series of projects we completed for a family of six. Projects included:

  • Kitchen renovation
  • Bathroom/laundry room addition
  • Primary bedroom with bathroom addition
  • Detached garage addition

Kitchen Renovation with Hidden Pantry

This family loves to entertain and wanted a kitchen that would allow for more food preparation and gathering space. We bumped the kitchen out toward the front yard, slightly into the dining room for the pantry, and into the home office space to create the kitchen of their dreams.

Before

During

After

Kitchen selections:

  • Custom cabinetry with Sherwin-Williams Shoji White paint and Clear Walnut Sable Stain
  • Calacatta Prado Quartz countertops by MSI Surfaces
  • The Tile Shop Tribeca Gypsum White backsplash tiles

Standout features include an oversized island, pot filler, drywall-wrapped hood with sconces on each side, stone splash and shelf, wet bar with mini-fridge, and of course, the hidden pantry!

Bathroom/Laundry Room Addition

A little space was taken from one bedroom to add a hallway that leads to the bathroom/laundry room addition. This space includes an all new custom-tiled tub and shower, custom single bowl vanity painted Sherwin-Williams 6244 Naval, tiled floor, new fixtures, quartz countertops, and a laundry hookup with cabinetry.

Primary Bedroom and Bathroom

As part of the same addition, we added a primary bedroom with a bathroom. The bathroom includes an all new, custom-tiled shower, double custom vanity in hickory, tiled floor, new fixtures, and a quartz countertop.

Exterior Work

Of course, the additions and bumpouts required some exterior work. While we were at it, we added a detached garage to match.

If your holiday wish list includes new floors, a kitchen refresh, or lower utility bills, you don’t have to wait until the spring thaw to start those projects. The winter remodeling season is perfect for indoor improvements that don’t require a lot of ventilation or moving walls. In fact, there are big advantages to tackling certain construction projects this time of year.

  • Cost savings. From contractor bids to better prices on paint, off-season remodeling can cost less than waiting until spring or summer.
  • Moisture factor. Drier air is preferred for some installations.
  • Mood booster. Home improvement on its own tends to lift the spirits. It’s an added high on top of the benefits of a nicer, more functional space.
  • Activity mode. We spend more time indoors during winter months. Staying busy with projects helps us keep moving and use time wisely.

Hire Learning

Remodeling companies and their contractors work year-round, often finishing up spring and summer projects in the winter. Also, it’s a good time to start planning spring renovations. Some projects need a few months of lead time, and if you start the process in the winter, you can hit the ground running in the spring and avoid delays.

These projects are well-suited for wintertime work:

  • Basement remodel: One of the biggest bangs for the buck is turning a basement into livable square footage. It increases home value and has a 70% average return on investment. An unfinished basement has the potential to solve any problem with space and storage and is less disruptive to live through than main-level remodels. The low humidity in winter provides the perfect conditions. Note that any finished basement requires at least one window for egress.
  • Flooring: Dry winter air prevents gaps, and the low humidity reduces the chance of warping.
  • Kitchen counters: Refreshing kitchen counters with new stone is less messy than ripping everything out, yet it makes a big impact. Minor kitchen improvements can have an 81% return on investment.
  • Kitchen appliances: Speaking of kitchens, appliances typically go on sale in January.

DIY Checklist

If you’re prone to cabin fever, try staying busy with handyman projects. Consider these upgrades and maintenance tips:

  • Paint with low-VOC brands—paint may be cheaper in the winter and dries faster
  • Perk up a laundry room with wallpaper, storage, and new lighting
  • Replace cabinet hardware
  • Add shelves and storage
  • Replace lightbulbs with LEDs
  • Check fire alarm batteries
  • Install crown molding
  • Seal cracks and ducts and add insulation to save as much as 10% off your utilities
  • Install an Energy Star-certified smart thermostat to save around $100 per year
  • Paint the garage floor

Spruce Up Your Home with CCG

A major kitchen remodeling project recoups between 31% to 42% of its cost, according to Remodeling Magazine’s 2023 Cost vs. Value Report. As one of the most utilized rooms in a house, the investment just makes sense.

But more than just the monetary ROI, a remodeled kitchen adds functionality to a space, streamlining daily cooking and cleaning tasks. That’s exactly the case in our recent kitchen renovation, which enhanced style, light, and function.

Project Timeline

Our team met with the client to start planning the kitchen in July 2022. After some redesign to ensure we were within their budgetary goals, we entered into contract in March 2023.

We finalized selections for custom cabinetry, countertops, paint colors, and more in June 2023. These selections include:

  • Shaker style custom cabinets
  • Custom cabinetry color: Sherwin Williams Shiitake
  • Island: Custom with Sable stain
  • MSI Calacatta Izaro Quartz countertops
  • The Tile Shop Coco Glossy Porcelain backsplash
  • Wall color: Sherwin Williams 6070 Heron Plume

The renovation began in May 2023 and lasted approx. 5-6 months.

Project Details

Central Construction Group’s team demoed the kitchen, added a new window to brighten the space, relocated the refrigerator, sink, and dishwasher, and installed all new cabinetry for better storage and function. This included a custom oversized island, corner lazy Susan, spice rack, a school-lunch prep/snack drawer, and hidden storage for the coffee maker.

To increase functionality, most appliances were relocated to create an efficient working triangle. A new pot filler at the stove eliminates the need to carry pots to the sink and back. A laundry hook-up just on the other side of the pot filler made for water access.

Shining Style

To bring more light into the space, CCG added a window above the sink and installed a sconce.

The stainless steel sink and faucet coordinate with the appliances. All in all, the new kitchen not only meets the homeowners’ aesthetic desires, but also significantly enhances their daily cooking and cleaning routines.

From planning to construction, and all of the material selections in between, Central Construction Group excels at all types of kitchen additions and renovations. To schedule a free, no-obligation consultation, call 317-213-6246 or connect with us on Facebook or Instagram.

Whether the projects are piling up, the walls are closing in, or you’re not enjoying your home anymore, remodeling is often the best choice for people who love their location and have a sentimental attachment to their home.

When to make the remodeling leap is harder to determine. The short answer is sooner, rather than later. Few house problems get better with time. Renovation projects typically take three to 12 months to nail down the design process, get estimates, pull permits, wait out weather and supply-chain delays, and complete the construction.

Protect your investment by doing your homework and starting early to ensure you won’t have to rush decisions, cut corners, or settle for in-stock design options.

Tackling multiple projects at once offers some advantages, like paying some costs only once, managing the household disruption in one shot, and achieving a cohesive design. On the other hand, tackling one project at a time means longer construction times, and costs can change over a longer period of time.

An experienced, full-service renovation company with designers on staff, like Central Construction Group (CCG), can help you make those decisions. Meanwhile, here are some signs you’re ready to remodel.

You Know Whether You’re Staying or Moving

Renovating for resale is different from renovating for your own lifestyle. You make different design decisions when your goal is to maximize the return on investment. For instance, it’s not wise to spring for items that don’t increase your home value, like a whirlpool tub or designer tile, if you aren’t going to enjoy them yourself. Your money is better spent in places that will boost home value, like kitchens, bathrooms, and additions.

But if you plan to stay in the house long-term (say, more than five years), it makes sense to prioritize your wish-list items regardless of their ROI potential. Go ahead and turn that fourth bedroom into a home gym if it makes you happy.

You Know What You Want

A designer can help you decide the best way to use your space. You don’t need to create the exact visual in your head—it’s a tall ask for the average person to visualize every detail of a fabulous, functional layout. That’s what professionals are for!

However, you should have a strong idea of what you want in general. Does your family need better areas to spend time together, or do they need their own spaces? Does someone want a home office? Do you value outdoor living? Your renovation should start with communicating clear goals to your designer or contractor.

Financing Is Lined Up

A well-thought plan is the most important part of a successful renovation—one that delivers what you want with the least amount of stress. And a good plan relies on a realistic budget, including a contingency of 15% to 30% for unforeseen costs.

Without a handle on the budget, it’s hard to navigate the many decisions you’ll make during a renovation. If the project hits a snag, you’ll need to know whether you’ll be happier spending more for what you envisioned or altering the design to stay on budget.

The House Is Deteriorating

Be wary of putting off leaks, crumbling structures, and water damage. Deterioration can multiply and lead to a more expensive repair, not to mention safety issues. If a repair involves getting into the walls or other major structural work, consider it an opportunity to address layout or cosmetic issues, too.

Don’t be embarrassed by a DIY project gone wrong. It’s gratifying to dabble in home improvement! Rest assured, you won’t be the first person your contractor has rescued. According to the National Association of Home Builders, 30% of remodeling jobs are repairs to a DIY fiasco.

Do you dream about renovating your outdated kitchen but worry about the budget, time, and commitment involved? Kitchen renovations require strategic planning and patient execution, but they don’t need to turn your life upside down. Here are some common misconceptions that might be holding you back.

Myth 1: Open Concept Is the Only Option

The casual open-concept approach to kitchen renovations continues in popularity, but it’s no longer considered the only option. There’s a bit of a backlash starting to emerge against big all-in-one living spaces now.

During COVID quarantines, homeowners began to appreciate separate rooms again for solitude, privacy, and a change of scenery. When people work from home—which might mean their kitchen table or an actual room with an office—they need their own sectioned-off spaces.

Myth 2: Dated Cabinets Are a Lost Cause

Some cabinets from the 1980s and 1990s may be high-quality. If your cabinets are well-built and still in good condition, painting, re-staining, or restoring them can save you money. According to Forbes, the average cost to replace cabinets in 2024 is $8,200. For larger kitchens and premium materials, the price can go up to $25,000.

Preserving existing cabinets is generally less expensive and less hassle. If you prefer to keep the existing cabinet layout in your kitchen, Central Construction Group can replace the doors, drawer fronts, and drawer glides, add creature features like rollout trays and trash bins, then repaint to make old cabinets look brand new.

Myth 3: You Can DIY It When You Have Time

Renovating a kitchen often involves updating plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and adding expensive cabinetry and appliances. This requires professional expertise and adhering to specific building codes. Stay in your own lane and flex your DIY muscles on small projects like painting the walls, installing pantry organization, or adding special decorative touches.

For bigger jobs, protect your home value and make the most of your renovation dollars by hiring professional home renovators like CCG. Not only will you ensure quality results and likely increase your home value, you’ll spare yourself the headache of tracking down materials and fixing costly mistakes.

Myth 4: You Have to Renovate the Entire Kitchen at Once

It can be cost-effective to bundle renovation projects, requiring you to pay only once for set-up, dumpster, and trip fees. But if committing to an entirely new layout and look gives you pause, it’s possible to proceed in phases. You could address cabinets and countertops first, then think about appliances, and then complete the renovation with flooring and lighting.

The key is to create a long-range plan from the beginning, so the piecemeal projects move the renovation in the right direction. You don’t want to replace cabinets or flooring if the layout is going to change later. With smart, careful planning, a full kitchen remodel can proceed gradually and allow for adjustments as you see it come together.
