How to Choose the Right Kitchen Remodeler

Have complete confidence in the company you choose to complete your kitchen remodel. Before choosing a kitchen remodeler to head up your project, follow these simple steps to avoid sleepless nights, and to receive the kitchen of your dreams.

Step 1: Identify your ideal remodeler

First things first. Envision the type of company you would like to work with. Remember, a kitchen remodel takes time, so you are going to be working with this company — and their representatives — for a while. So take the time to think about the types of traits you value in a company. Whether that be good communication skills, education, humor, efficiency or experience — write those traits down. Most homeowners want to be educated about choices, enjoy the team working on their kitchen space, and have the project completed in a timely manner — but whatever is most important to you should be noted.

Step 2: Research your options & ask for referrals

Once you have decided the type of company you want to work with, start doing your research. Go online and look for kitchen remodelers in your area. Look at their online portfolios, and read the company profile. One of the best ways to find a kitchen remodeling company is through word of mouth-hands down. Ask relatives, friends and neighbors whom they’ve had good experiences with. what made it a positive experience, how the contractor handled problems and whether he or she would use the same contractor again. Also be certain to check out different reviews on various sites, such as Angie’s List, HOUZZ.com, and the Better Business Bureau. Read the review details to identify any patterns that may emerge as far as company strengths and weaknesses.

Step 4: Look at credentials

After identifying a few candidates, begin to look at their credentials. Do some homework and find out the licensing and certification requirements in your area. Find out whether the kitchen remodelers hold all the required licenses from state and local municipalities — along with designations from any professional associations such as the National Kitchen & Bath Association, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and the National Association of Homebuilders.

Step 5: Interview candidates

Try to narrow your list down to three candidates, and set up interviews or meetings with each company. Be ready for your meeting with a list of questions, any concerns, and your expectations and needs. Remember, how a contractor handles questions from potential clients is extremely important — but communication goes both ways. The remodeling company representative should also ask you plenty of questions, too. These meetings will give you insight into how the project will go, and following your instinct will help ensure a perfect match.

Step 6: Check references

If all has gone well up to this point, ask the remodeling company to see some of their most recent projects. While most companies try to keep their websites up-to-date, not all of their projects make it onto the online portfolios. Also, consider requesting references and call the company’s former customers to check up on them. Ask the former client how the company did at executing the project: Were they on time and on budget? Were the customers pleased with the outcome? Was there anything that could have been done differently? Do they have any advice for you?

After you have gone through the steps outlined above, you should be able to sign the contract on your new kitchen remodel with confidence.
