Which Type of Paint Do I Use?

Not sure which paint to use to freshen up your home? The seemingly endless options for paint types and colors on the market today can overwhelm even the best DIYer.

Will you get better results with a specific type of paint for water-prone kitchens and bathrooms? Which type of paint provides a slightly glossy finish, but still holds up to regular cleaning? What type of paint do you use for accent walls or to create a textured look?

As an experienced general contractor who’s painted a countless number of homes in Central Indiana, Central Construction Group explains what you need to know before deciding which paint to use for your next project.

Defining Paint Sheens

When deciding on a type of paint sheen, it is important to consider whether you intend to use the paint for hiding, highlighting, accenting, or texturing.

Matte paints are ideal for hiding imperfections in ceilings and walls while providing a deep, non-reflective color. This type of sheen is a great option to create a rich, textured color without shine. However, because matte paint can be difficult to clean, it is best for adult bedrooms and rooms that won’t be roughed up by children.

Rooms that require more frequent cleaning, like kitchens and bathrooms, benefit from glossier paints. Eggshell (slightly glossier than matte paint) and satin (slightly glossier than eggshell) provide superior durability, which allows washing without damaging the color, and both work well to hide minor imperfections. These sheens are ideal for most interior rooms.

Semi-gloss and gloss paints offer the most reflective sheens and provide the greatest durability, but they also highlight imperfections. These sheens are best-suited for baseboards, moldings, doors, and accent walls.

Paint Types We Use

If you’re overwhelmed with the countless variety of paint products, we recommend the following Sherwin Williams products for interior painting.

We use the SuperPaint Interior Acrylic Latex for all interior projects. This product is a time-saver because it is a paint and primer in one. It also provides a rich and lasting finish with excellent scrubbability.

Upgrade Paint Options

If you’re searching for a top-of-the-line product to provide a more professional look, consider upgrading to one of the following paint options.

Cashmere Interior Acrylic Latex is our first upgrade option. This product is our favorite due to its ultra-smooth, rich, and silky finish. The smooth texture of this paint allows it to provide outstanding coverage and hide. It is available in Flat, Low Lustre, Pearl Lustre, and Medium Lustre.

Our second upgrade option is Duration Home Interior Acrylic Latex. Another paint and primer in one, this paint is ideal for high-traffic residential and commercial spaces because it offers advanced stain-blocking technology and minimal color rub-off after washing. It is available in Flat, Matte, Satin, and Semi-Gloss.

Our third upgrade option is Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex Paint. This paint and primer in one offers top-of-the-line hide, coverage, durability, and washability. Not only does it provide a uniform finish, but it also offers resistance against scrubbing, staining, blocking, water spotting, and burnish. These exceptional qualities make it the perfect option for kitchens and bathrooms. It is available in Flat, Matte, Satin, and Semi-Gloss.
