Dark and Outdated to Light and Airy: Before & After Kitchen Remodeling Project in Carmel

Home remodel
Removing a wall between the kitchen and dining room, lightening the walls and cabinets, and tying the rooms together with a large island transformed this previously dark kitchen into a light and airy haven. (CCG Photo)

As a 50th wedding anniversary gift to his wife, a Carmel husband hired Central Construction Group to brighten their home’s outdated kitchen and dining room area so the couple can age in place comfortably and host larger family gatherings.

The two-story home built in 1989 included dark oak cabinets, a deep red brick paint color on the interior walls, and a load-bearing wall that closed off the kitchen from the dining room.

The owners of this 1989 Carmel home wanted a new, brighter look for their kitchen. (CCG Photo)

The CCG crew worked with the couple to design an open-concept layout for the kitchen and dining room area by knocking down the wall between the rooms and installing a beam to support the opening. It required relocating all HVAC and electrical lines inside the wall.

A large peninsula island with seating for six and linen-colored cabinetry featuring a raised panel door style add special touches to this kitchen remodel and give it a traditional look. (CCG Photo)

CCG also repainted the interior walls, installed a new floor, and replaced all of the trim, electrical and plumbing. Using a style sheet created by CCG’s interior designer to see how all of the selected materials worked together, the couple chose new linen-colored cabinetry, quartz countertops, travertine natural stone backsplash tile and luxury vinyl plank flooring.

Material selections for the kitchen remodel included a double undermount sink, a Delta Leland faucet, Cambria Ceaserstone Casata countertop and COREtec Barnwood Rustic Pine luxury vinyl flooring. (CCG Photo)
A family member crafted this wood buffet countertop and the couple asked CCG to incorporate it into the new design. (CCG Photo)

Also adding a special touch to the kitchen remodel is a vent that pops up from the island cooktop, which the owners can activate with a simple push of a button. Instead of a rangehood extending down into the middle of the kitchen, CCG installed a down-draft behind the cooktop that vents to the basement and then outside.

The Carmel couple chose a Cambria Wellington quartz countertop for this larger island with more seating for all of their grandchildren. The island cooktop also includes a hidden, pop-up vent! (CCG Photo)

Like many kitchens built during this time period, the room included a bulkhead and soffit above the cabinets. CCG removed it and installed taller, more versatile cabinets with elegant crown molding. The cabinetry also includes convenient features like soft-close doors and drawers, a trash pull-out cabinet, and a roll-out spice rack.
