5 Things to Consider Before Starting a Renovation Project

With the weather starting to warm up, it’s time to start thinking about your upcoming renovation projects! You’ve lived in your home long enough to know what works for your family and get an idea of what you may be missing. It’s easy to get in over your head during a renovation, making the planning stages the most important part of any project. Here are some things that us here at Central Construction Group, Inc. believe you should consider before beginning your next renovation project.

Permits

Before you begin any remodeling home projects, we check with your local authorities to determine the permits you’ll need. Most state and local authorities require permits to make sure all the work is done according to building codes. Permits are frequently required for new construction, additions, major renovations, structural changes, electrical, mechanical and plumbing work. To save time and money, it’s best we pull all the necessary permits before beginning work!

Cost

The average cost of a room renovation will vary based on the size of the room you’re renovating, materials used, and the cost of labor. Most jobs will cost more and take longer than you expect, so always add 20 percent to what you think a project will total when budgeting. The best way to estimate renovation costs is to call us for a detailed discussion to see if you are ready to remodel soon or need some additional time to plan.

Extent of Remodel

Before you decide how extensively to renovate, you need to know what your end goal is for your home. Are you renovating to raise the resale value of your home, or will you be staying put for years to come? Consider the condition of your neighborhood before you begin, and know which renovations are a good return on investment, and which will be considered overdoing it for the area. Don’t forget to leave room for finishing touches! If you want to love your space—and increase its value—make sure you leave room in the budget for working on interior design and décor.

Underlying Problems

During any renovation, it’s common to uncover unexpected underlying problems, especially if you have an older home. Luckily, you planned ahead and left the room in your budget, unfortunately, this doesn’t always cover it. When it comes to common renovation issues, knowing what to look for and what to expect is half the battle. Choosing a seasoned contractor for your renovation will save you headaches and stress along the way! Always remember to check references and consider spending a little more for higher quality work. Here at CCG, this year marks our 10 year anniversary in business, however, we have much more experience from there. Brian, President of CCG, has been in the construction industry for over 19 years!

Time

A complete renovation can take anywhere from 3 to 8+ months depending on a ton of factors. Consider what you will do with children or pets during renovations to keep them away from construction zones.
