Age in Place—and Style—with Elegant Home Modifications by CCG

kitchen remodeling

Are you a Baby Boomer ready to retire, downsize, and spend your golden years in style and comfort? Or are you part of the growing trend of older adults who wish to remain in their homes as they age, but require a few home modifications to make that possible?

National trends show Baby Boomers retiring at an unprecedented rate, with a common desire to either move from their larger family homes to smaller homes in walkable areas near amenities, entertainment, and multi-modal transportation, or remain in their own homes with modifications for safety and comfort.

Central Construction Group can help, no matter which path you choose. As a licensed, full-service residential general contractor serving Marion, Hamilton and Boone counties and the greater Indianapolis area, CCG specializes in superior home remodeling and upgrades to modify homes for long-term safety and accessibility.

In November, we introduced several home remodeling ideas to thrive in place with full accessibility as you age. Last month, we explored creating dedicated workspaces and exercise rooms for homeowners who need to work remotely.

Today, we take the thriving-at-home idea a step further by sharing the details and photos of a recent whole home renovation project and master suite addition, which includes several modifications to age in place, but allows the homeowners to do so with style and elegance.

Kitchen Updates

For this whole house renovation project, we removed a wall between the kitchen and family room to open up the space, then installed a new large kitchen island and kitchen buffet with custom cabinetry topped by natural quartz stone countertops.

The custom cabinetry features aging-in-place modifications, such as wide cabinet pull handles, which make it easier for stiff hands to open doors or drawers, easy-glide full extension drawers to reach items in the pantry or find the right pot under the stove, and a hinged cabinet door in the kitchen that lifts up and out of the way for better access to hidden appliances.

Wider Doorways, New Flooring

CCG also widened doorways throughout the home — another modification needed if you’re ever confined to a wheelchair — and added new lighting, flooring, and paint to every room based on the homeowners’ choice of pairing classic and timeless shades of white with black accents and plank wood flooring.

Bathroom Modifications

The bathrooms in the home also received a major makeover, as we reconfigured the master bathroom to add more features for safety, mobility, and comfort, renovated a second bathroom with similar items, and added a half bath for guests. A new walk-in, no-lip shower with grab bars, oversized shower door, a shower sitting bench, and built-in shampoo niches makes it safer to use and easier to clean.

Master Suite Addition

This project added a new master suite to the home, with a master bathroom, two walk-in closets, and relocation of the laundry room to move it closer to the master bedroom.

Mudroom and New Entryway

To better facilitate one of the homeowners, who operates his own workshop, CCG also added a mudroom with a sink and bathroom that’s easily accessible from outside, along with a new entryway and lockers for storage off the garage.

Living Room Updates

Custom-made bookshelves, new fireplace stone, new ceiling beams, windows, lighting, paint, and flooring spruce up the living room area, while exterior work included a new driveway, lighting, and paint.

Check back next month as we dive deeper into this whole home renovation and share more details and photos to inspire your next home improvement project.
