Tile Trends: New Ideas for Kitchens, Baths, and More

kitchen remodel by Central Construction Group

Installing tile is one of the best ways to inject life into interiors, whether it’s a part of new construction or a remodeling project. Most tiles are durable, easy to maintain, and simple to install compared to other high-impact changes, like adding cabinets and removing walls.

With so many fashionable options now, you’ll have no trouble finding a stylish tile to spruce up your next project.

Here are a few tile trends to inspire your next remodeling project or design scheme.

Kit-Kat Tile

Hexagons now have competition for the hottest shape in backsplash and flooring tiles. Kit-kat tiles resemble narrow matchsticks (or the popular candy bar) that are set vertically or horizontally in clean rows.

The meticulous look offers a hint of Japanese calm and orderliness. Kit-kat tile can also be laid in a zig-zag shape on a floor or wall for a more dynamic feel. Kit-kat tiles frequently come in glass and porcelain. Because the most common looks are monochromatic, it’s a good way to add a pop of color without going crazy.

Encaustic Patterns

Encaustic tile is patterned and usually has an aged, rustic aesthetic. That’s because the technique has been around for centuries—true encaustic motifs are burned into the tile with wax.

Now, the same look is often achieved through other methods on ceramic or concrete tiles, and encaustic tile is a popular option for making a bold statement on the floor, backsplash, or fireplace surround. Styles range from traditional patterns that feel like they belong in a Spanish or Italian palazzo to modern graphics to cheerful florals. Encaustic tiles are usually on the larger size, like Daltile’s Quartetto collection of 8″ x 8″ porcelain tile.

Organic Shapes

Natural design elements are trending in homes, and tile fits in with unusual shapes inspired by the outdoors. The Tile Shop has several affordable options, like the Costas Emerald Mix, a glossy green porcelain mosaic for walls and floors. For a neutral look, the black glass Petale and white marble Elia Honed by Alison Victoria are beautiful, simple, and versatile.

Moroccan Motifs

This trend started with curvy, glossy fish scales and ornate, interlocking Arabesques. The popularity continues to grow as homeowners look for unique and exciting tile designs.

The latest iteration of the Moroccan tile obsession is Zellige, which is neutral and earthy. It’s characterized by irregular glazing, a look that works well with rustic, artsy, or bohemian aesthetics. If you’re worried about Moroccan tile becoming outdated quickly, stick with a neutral color. Some tonal variation in the palette will still feel special and high-end.

’80s Revival

It’s hip to be square again. The 1980s brought us several all-square looks, like glass-block walls. In backsplashes and floors, the 4″ x 4″ tile was ubiquitous. It’s making a comeback in period-appropriate shades like soft pink and mint green. It has even resurfaced as an affordable kitchen countertop alternative to stone if you want a cottage or rustic touch. Tile countertops are controversial among designers, so consider the pros and cons.

Radiant Heat

It’s easy to get caught up in the look of the tile, but consider how it feels, too. Treat yourself to the affordable luxury of radiant heating. Radiant heating is an electrified mesh pad or webbing that can be installed under most tile and stone, and it’s operated by a wall thermostat. You can warm an entire floor or just a patch next to a shower, sink, or oven, where you tend to stand.
