Maximize Kitchen Storage Space

When redesigning or remodeling a kitchen, many of our customers complain about the lack of storage space in their kitchen. The kitchen should be a functional place that allows you to efficiently and effectively prepare meals and entertain guests. Without proper storage space, that simply can’t happen. From pots and pans to baking racks, spices, and small kitchen appliances — the kitchen is full of necessary items that deserve a proper home.

Here are some innovative ways to keep your clutter to a minimum while maximizing space.

Top-to-bottom storage

To make the most of the wall space that you have in your existing kitchen, ask your kitchen designer to extend cabinetry to the ceiling. By leaving no dead space at the top of the cabinet, you open up the possibilities of using that space to store less-used serving ware or small kitchen appliances.

Drawers not doors

Ask for pull-out drawers in base cabinets in lieu of doors. Large cabinets without a storage solution leave a lot of unused space. Pull-out drawers use the most of the space below the countertop and allow you to stay organized. Use pegs or dividers to keep pots and pans, or glass bowls from clanking together.

Don’t cut corners

Many kitchen spaces with corner cabinets simply don’t make use of the awkward yet valuable space. To get the most use of corner cabinets in your kitchen, consider asking your kitchen designer to add hinged cabinet doors and the addition of a lazy Susan. Unlike the name implies, a lazy Susan works hard to keep your corner cabinet contents easy to access.

Pull-out pantry

Pantries that pull-out of the wall — as opposed to those that take up wall space — make effective use of potential wasted space. Pull-out pantries, which are touted for their ease of use — come in various sizes and purposes. Some are designed to hold small items such as spices, while others can hold up to 300 pounds of food and drink items. They are also convenient, as they allow you to easily see what you have stored and are accessible from both sides. Ask your kitchen designer about the benefits of a pull-out pantry, and to find out if its right for your space and unique needs.

Go vertical

Dedicating a space for a floor-to-ceiling storage wall can help keep your organized and make a great impact in your kitchen design. Whether it be open-shelving or a wall of cabinets, having one space in the kitchen to house your things works wonders.

Sink slide-out

The space under the sink is often underutilized due to the irregular shape of pipes, but don’t let that deter you. There are many organizational options, such as over-the-door racks, pull-out drawers and stackable shelves available — perfect for storing cleaning supplies.

Move the mugs

Valuable cabinet space is often taken up by drinking ware such as coffee mugs, tea cups and stemware. Consider adding racks or hooks beneath upper cabinets to keep your drinking vessels out of the way and easily accessible.
