Thinking of Remodeling Your Home? 5 Helpful Tips to Get Started

home construction blueprint

Tired of your outdated home that’s no longer functional but shows real potential? Is your head full of remodeling ideas, but you don’t know where to go from there?

Starting the remodeling process can prove stressful and overwhelming, even if you can envision the end result and properly plan ahead. Let Central Construction Group in Indianapolis walk you through the process and guide your vision to reality.

Whether you dream of a complete house remodel, a bathroom or kitchen remodel, or a room addition constructed for more living space, we will complete the job and adhere to the highest construction service standards.

Our professional, experienced team treats every renovation project like it’s their own home. During this “new normal” we also focus on the safety of everyone involved in the remodel process.

We start with a phone consultation to review photos of your space and discuss the scope of work or your wish list. From there, we will coordinate an in-person home assessment to begin planning the framework of your project. We’re happy to accommodate all of your needs, including help establish a realistic budget, give a detailed estimate with a visual design proposal, and develop a realistic project timeline.

1. Where to Start Remodel Plans, and How to Prioritize?

The first step is to develop a concrete idea of what you want to accomplish with your home remodel. Factors to consider:

  • Prioritize areas of work (kitchen and powder bath vs. master bathroom and hall bath, or a complete whole-home remodel)
  • Foot traffic patterns and high-use areas impacted
  • Furniture size and placement
  • Utilities potentially impacted (like plumbing and electricity)
  • How do you expect to use the remodeled space?

2. Seek Inspiration for Home Remodeling

Start by building a detailed vision of your home improvement project plan — whether it’s a checklist, your favorite Houzz projects, a Pinterest board, pictures from magazines and trendy blogs, or a simple sketch — and include the areas you want to focus on improving.

Our CCG Indy remodeling team takes pride in every project we do. Using our expertise, we can help you develop the design, pick out materials, and think through the structural and mechanical part of the building process. Check out some of our recent projects here: ccg-indy.com/showcase

3. Set a Renovation Budget

Write out a timeline of when you’d ideally like the construction and renovations to start and finish, keeping in mind most good remodeling contractors book jobs several months in advance and it takes a while to secure equity or home improvement loans.

There’s a reason the busiest remodeling companies are the ones in highest demand. You want the work done right the first time, which takes the proper time to plan and coordinate, as well as a high level of skill and experience.

Our homes represent the largest investment we make as homeowners, therefore at CCG we stay mindful of your initial budget during the home remodel process and work to avoid any expensive surprises or mistakes. We give detailed, itemized estimates for every project, along with dependable project scheduling updates.

4. Get Prepared for the Remodeling Process

Once you put a remodeling plan in place, start the preparation work to make it easier on yourself when it’s time to start construction.

Pack up and prepare your home so at least part of it remains functional and livable during the home remodel, or plan to make alternative living accomodations. Do you have pets and/or kids? It’s a good idea to reach out to family and friends for help keeping pets and children away from construction hazards whenever possible.

Also mentally prepare for having your home under construction and steel yourself for any unexpected issues that may arise during remodeling, like delayed delivery of an appliance or fixture you have your heart set on.

Other examples include unpredictable weather and family illness. We’ll do our best to mitigate any frustrations, but unfortunately it’s part of the building process, no matter how well you plan.

5. Pick a Full-Service, Quality Indy Remodeling Company

It’s important to pick a full-service remodeling company that takes pride in providing customers with quality work. Either virtually or in person, schedule a meeting with the project manager or general contractor who would work with you on the renovation and actually be on-site much of the time to get a feel for their personality, professionalism and competence.

Vet remodelers online to see if they have mostly good or bad reviews from past customers, and ask for a couple of recent homeowner references you can call or email to see how they performed on jobs similar to yours.

At CCG, we value our customers and have worked for more than a decade in the Indianapolis area, improving historic homes and new high-end homes — and everything in-between. Let us help you plan an attractive, well-designed and efficient home remodel based on your ideas and goals. Our remodeling services include, but are not limited to:
