Dreaming of a new kitchen for the new year? Turn those aspirations into reality with these top kitchen design trends for 2018.

Like the look of a contemporary kitchen, with clean and simple lines and easy storage solutions? Or maybe you prefer a more traditional, but functional kitchen? No matter your personal tastes, kitchen trends for the new year mix and match materials, color tones, cabinet styles and more to create a stylish, customized kitchen to meet your family’s needs.

Whether you want to completely remodel your kitchen or just update it, here are 5 kitchen design trends to incorporate into your new look:

1. Mix and Match Finishes

The monochromatic kitchen enjoyed its heyday as king in the kitchen for its clean look, but homeowners today prefer to add pops of color and different textures to liven up the room. While some OCD types may still prefer the all-white look, the trend for 2018 uses multiple colors in the kitchen.

Pair dark jewel tones in black, navy or emerald green for countertops with wood floors and wood cabinets. Use natural elements like rough-cut wood or copper to offset a neutral, grey cabinet scheme. Create a focal point with natural stone floor tiles or sculpted, beveled or stacked backsplash tiles. Throw a final knockout kitchen punch with a one-of-a-kind ceiling treatment, such as coffered, tray or wood beams.

2. Storage and Organization

Tired of digging through drawers and cabinets to find what you’re looking for in the kitchen? Get organized this year with better cabinetry storage solutions.

Consider adding appliance garages for small appliances, drawer dividers for cutlery and utensils, pullouts for spices, roll-out organizer trays in deep drawers for easy access, and caddies for pots and pans. Hide your trash and recyclable containers inside a pull-out cabinet, and make cleanup easier with a dedicated — but hidden — broom closet.

3. Clean and Classy Countertops

Quartz remains king when it comes to high-end countertops in the kitchen. More stain- and scratch-resistant than granite and requiring less maintenance overall, this nonporous material holds up well and creates a classy look in any household. With a wide range of colors and realistic stone patterns to choose from, quartz provides an affordable but elegant option.

The trend for countertops in 2018 uses dark jewel tones, like black, navy, emerald green and even plum to complement light-colored walls or two-toned wood cabinets.

4. Smart Kitchens

Home automation is a huge trend for 2018, and kitchens provide the optimal space for integrating this technology. Fancy gadgets and appliances can help to automate your kitchen, but today’s technology goes even further to make life easier.

Keep germs at a minimum with a motion-sensor kitchen faucet. Let your refrigerator alert you when certain grocery items run low. Use your smartphone to control lights or pump in soothing music while you cook. Or lock your liquor cabinet and keep it safe from young children with a motion-activated sensor connected to your phone.

5. Natural Elements

Introducing natural elements into your kitchen design creates a cozy feeling and stress-free environment in the most-used room in your home. Add natural lighting with a skylight in the ceiling or make your kitchen feel larger and brighter by removing the upper cabinetry.

Love the look of open shelving? Try rough-cut wood as a natural element for the shelving and display family heirlooms as a unique focal point. How about brick as a backdrop on one wall in your kitchen? Uniform in pattern, bricks adds texture and color to any room and serves as a nice transition in an open floor plan concept.
