Project Timeline

Our team met with the client to start planning the kitchen in July 2022. After some redesign to ensure we were within their budgetary goals, we entered into contract in March 2023. 

We finalized selections for custom cabinetry, countertops, paint colors, and more in June 2023. These selections include:

• Shaker style custom cabinets
• Custom cabinetry color: Sherwin Williams Shiitake 
• Island: Custom with Sable stain
• MSI Calacatta Izaro Quartz countertops 
• The Tile Shop Coco Glossy Porcelain backsplash
• Wall color: Sherwin Williams 6070 Heron Plume

The renovation began in May 2023 and lasted approx. 5-6 months. 

Project Details

Central Construction Group’s team demoed the kitchen, added a new window to brighten the space, relocated the refrigerator, sink, and dishwasher, and installed all new cabinetry for better storage and function. This included a custom oversized island, corner lazy Susan, spice rack, a school-lunch prep/snack drawer, and hidden storage for the coffee maker.

To increase functionality, most appliances were relocated to create an efficient working triangle. A new pot filler at the stove eliminates the need to carry pots to the sink and back. A laundry hook-up just on the other side of the pot filler made for water access.

Shining Style

To bring more light into the space, CCG added a window above the sink and installed a sconce.

The stainless steel sink and faucet coordinate with the appliances. All in all, the new kitchen not only meets the homeowners’ aesthetic desires, but also significantly enhances their daily cooking and cleaning routines.

A recent ADA-compliant kitchen remodel included a demo of the existing light wood cabinetry, dreary countertops and outdated fixtures. A new wall framed the space, along with new plumbing and electrical fixtures. The original wood flooring remained in place.

Accessible Doesn’t Mean Basic

The cabinet paint color, PPG Chinese Porcelain Blue, gave the small space much-needed texture and visual interest. 

One key element in ADA-accessible kitchens requires adding large clearance space to maneuver a wheelchair, walker or scooter. Before the remodel, the counter near the sink was two levels, making it difficult for someone in a seated position to easily reach the upper counter level. After renovations, one sleek, smooth surface provides easy access from a motorized scooter. Plus, this remodeled ADA-accessible kitchen includes plenty of space around the kitchen sink and the appliances. 

Newly installed base cabinets feature a 3.25-inch top rail with reinforced face frames to support 250 pounds of downward or outward force, an especially important aspect to prevent falls and meet ADA compliance.

Cambria waterfall countertops add a sleek, modern appearance that provides contrast to the brightly painted cabinets. A new, high-end Bosch appliance package, including a sub-zero Bosch refrigerator, completes the design while keeping everything within easy reach.

One of the biggest decisions a homeowner must make when remodeling a kitchen is whether to completely replace existing kitchen cabinets or to salvage them by refinishing or refacing the cabinetry.

Each option comes with its own pros and cons, mainly related to cost, the type of cabinet material, and how long it will take to get the best cabinet refinishing results. Quality kitchen cabinets can last 50 years, but if yours are starting to show damage, don’t function properly or just look outdated, now may be the time to replace them with something more timeless, sturdy and durable.

Here’s what you need to know when deciding whether to refinish, reface or replace kitchen cabinets:

Refinishing Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen cabinet refinishing requires good bones or a good foundation to build upon, since you’re keeping most of the cabinetry components and simply applying new paint or stain.

If there’s evidence of any water damage, the cabinets don’t function properly, or the cabinet box is too worn, don’t waste your time and money on refinishing. The wood won’t hold up to the sanding or chemical stripping needed to remove the existing finish.

The type of wood matters, also. Cabinets made from laminate or thermofoil cannot be refinished (can’t be sanded or stripped), and cabinets made from wood with a rougher grain may prove difficult in the refinishing process.

This client’s kitchen cabinet refinishing project started with a light maple wood, featuring a smoother grain that’s ideal for refinishing. The client was happy with the function and layout of the cabinets, and she didn’t want to add any special pullout drawers or other features. We removed and sanded down each individual cabinet door, drawer and box, before filling holes from previous hardware, priming and sanding them down again. We added the finishing touch by applying two coats of medium dark gray paint for a new and modern look.

Refacing Kitchen Cabinets

While applying new paint or stain to existing kitchen cabinets is one way to refinish them, it’s also possible to reface cabinets by installing completely new cabinet doors and drawer fronts, or just by installing new wood or laminate veneer over the fronts.

Homeowners who go the cabinet refacing route typically like the layout and functionality of their kitchens, and they see no need to replace their cabinets. They usually want a more modern, fresher look to hide years of wear and tear.

When refacing, think about adding accessibility and functionality to well-constructed cabinets, including options like pull-out drawers, rotating shelves or open shelving. Freshen up the interior, too, by sanding or painting to match your kitchen’s new look.

Remodeling a historic home in the Meridian Kessler neighborhood presents many challenges, but modernizing and updating an older home can be so sweet when the job is done.

The homeowners of this two-story brick home built in the early 1900s wanted a more open-concept space to accommodate their growing family. Working with the homeowners’ design ideas, Central Construction Group crafted solutions for two high-traffic areas of the home, the kitchen and basement.

“These are the kind of projects we love to do because they are an amazing transformation,” says CCG President Brian Oltmanns.

Kitchen Remodeling

The home’s existing kitchen included a tiny eat-in nook, a wall separating it from the dining room, and a powder bathroom right off a side entry to the home. The CCG crew eliminated two walls completely, opening the kitchen to the dining room and allowing additional light along a third wall.

Updates included custom-made, inset style painted cabinetry, as well as natural stone quartzite countertops with an L-shape peninsula. Other new features include a stainless-steel refrigerator, a farmhouse sink and a six-burner gas oven range with a decorative copper hood.

To pair a neutral paint scheme of cabinets in a beige tone and walls in off-white tones, CCG installed new oak flooring in the kitchen to provide a nice, darker accent to the room, and stained the entire first floor to match. LED pendant and undercabinet lighting provide an elegant finishing touch.

“It’s a beautiful kitchen,” Oltmanns says, and the new finishes complement the historic features of the home.

Basement Remodeling

Before adding a new bedroom and bathroom in the basement, and remodeling a laundry area and family room, CCG first needed to install a waterproofing system by removing concrete along the perimeter walls, placing drainage tile under the slab and adding a sump pump.

Workers then needed to reconfigure numerous electrical and mechanical runs. “There were many challenges,” Oltmanns says. “Many older homes do not have the greatest basement space to work with; many times, we can’t even finish the ceilings with reasonable height. This was a good exception, and it turned out great.”

A sliding barn door separates the bedroom and new  bathroom from the laundry space and features a full stand-up shower with tiled shower walls, toilet, vanity and luxury vinyl tile flooring. The new living room features a wet bar and existing slate tile flooring that was preserved during the renovation.

In our previous posts we’ve shared some of the qualities of the full overlay cabinet, in which the door face practically covers the entire framing of the cabinet set, requiring more hardware. Standard overlay cabinets, however, provide a more modest and classic design, giving your kitchen a more traditional finish, with more than enough face frame, or “reveal”.

Designs for Standard Overlay Cabinets

Overlay refers to the balance between the size and design of your cabinet doors and exposed cabinet face frames. Depending on the type of overlay you’d like for your kitchen cabinets, suitable hardware will have to be installed to accommodate the space or lack thereof in the framing of your home’s kitchen cabinet. You can purchase kitchen cabinets with either overlay style, or you can decide on your overlay selection during the design process if your manufacturer offers custom cabinetry options.
